Experts believe that the Caspian seals can become completely extinct within the following 10 - 15 years. Based on the historical decline of the species, the continuing fall in the population, and the ongoing nature of the threats, the Caspian seal is now classified as endangered on the IUCN red list of species threatened with extinction. The Caspian seal is the only marine mammal in the Caspian Sea, and is found no where else in the world.
A few months ago Astrakhan was visited by the experts from the Netherlands and Iran to discuss the issues of Caspian seal conservation.
Alongside with this, more than 89 thousand people from different regions of Russia have signed the petition aimed at protecting Caspian seal (change.org).
