The 7th fire-fighting expedition of Greenpeace Russian has arrived to Astrakhan Region. The members and volunteers will help the inspectors of Astrakhan State Reserve to protect valuable habitats. The main objective of the trip is to attract public attention to spring fires. GrrenPeace will also assist Astrakhan Reserve to fight fire.
"The reserve is extremely important for the Caspian region, south and center of Russia". Moreover it has an international status. It is a habitat and feeding and breeding spot for numerous migratory birds which can be harmed by extensive fires" - says the leader of the expedition, Mr. Grigoriy Kuksin.
Astrakhan Reserve was established in 1919 and is one of the oldest reserves in Russia. In 1984 it was awarded the status of a biosphere reserve. The area of the reserve is about 70 thousand hectares.
