Dagestan State Reserve was established 30 years ago, on 9 January 1987. It was established to study and preserve typical and unique natural complexes in the water area and the coastal part of the Kizlyar Bay of the Caspian Sea.
The total area of the reserve is 19 061 ha. It is inhabited by more than 60 threatened species of animals. It accommodates about 300 bird species, more than 50 of which are listed in the Red Books of Russia and Dagestan.
