Carcasses of 243 Caspian seals were found on the Caspian coast near Fort-Shevchenko, Mangistau region, Kuangali Ashakhov, deputy head of the regional forestry and wildlife inspection said on Tuesday.
About 20 carcasses had been previously found on the sea coast. A special commission has been established to look into the case.
According to expert data, the population of seals was estimated at about 1 million individuals in early XXth century. In 2012 seal population of Kazakhstan was about 100 thousand. In October 2008 the status of seal changed from vulnerable to threatened.
